'From the Fjells to the Fjords' - a walk
through Norway
FLAMSDALEN

The walk down Flamsdalen is 21 kilometres. This was our worst day weather-wise, with rain for much of the walk. The top part goes steeply down 21 zigzags to reach the bottom of the gorge.

By the side of the zigzags the river crashes down spectacular waterfalls. On the other side of the valley the Flambanen line can be seen.

The Flamsbana goes past another spectacular fall, which is complete with a 'huldra' or wood nymph. If you follow her, you're never seen again.

The river then runs rapidly down the valley

The blue water shows the river must have originated in ice melt

Halfway down the path crosses the Flamsbana, the steepest adhesion railway in the world. Almost 80% of the railway has a gradient of 1:18.

For those of you who've read 'Summer Light'by Andrew Stevenson, the enorents are still there, but I didn't see any. Presumably an enorent is a submarine troll.
