'From the Fjells to the Fjords' - a walk through Norway

A set of six walks (plus a day in Bergen) in July/August 2003 which took us from the high fjells down to the fjords. Click on the blue links for the highlight images.
Our first walk was in the mountain plateau country around Geilo, (three hours north west of Oslo on the train) in the shadow of the Hallingkarvet mountain.
We then walked a section of the Rallarvegen, the old navvies road used when building the mountain section of the Oslo-Bergen railway, and nowadays in the summer a biking and hiking track.
We arrived at the remote hamlet of Finse, which is inaccessible by road, and where Scott's expedition trained on the glaciers prior to their ill fated expedition to the South Pole. There we climbed into the wilderness reaching the summit of Sankt Pal (1694 metres), crossing snowfields.
We then travelled by train to the junction at Myrdal where the famous Flamsbana railway descends Flamsdalen to the fjord at Flam. One of us walked the 21 kilometres down, the other went by train!
The next day we made a short journey down the fjord to Aurland where we ascended to the end of the ridge at Hovdungo.
The final walking day was the trek down Aurlandsdalen from Osterbo to Vassbygdi, which is renowned as one of the finest day's walks in Norway; once again only one of us did this!
Then we travelled back up the fjord and the Flamsbanen to Myrdal where we caught the train to Bergen where we stayed overnight before our return to the UK.
