GREAT MELL FELL  7 September 2005

On a cloudy, breezy, and occasionally damp morning we started the 950 feet climb from the unsurfaced lane which branches off the Matterdale End to Motherby road.

The path initially leads up through mixed deciduous woodland.

Breaking out of the woods there are extensive views across to the Dodds - and a rare patch of blue sky.

The trees on the open hillside are bent and twisted by the strong westerly winds which always seem to blow over Great Mell Fell.

Near the top of the hill there is a band of Scotch Pines, several of which appear to have been toppled by the gales last January.

On the summit at 1760 feet. A view of Place Fell and in the clouds the hills around the head of Ullswater. You can just make out a sliver of the lake below Place Fell.

Not all the upright trees are in good heart.

Back down through the bracken to the car.
