The Hertfordshire Way

Stage 7a Tring to Hemel Hempstead - Part 2

A fine display of spring bulbs in Potten End.

Between the grand houses at Little Heath, the path passes through Hertfordshire's version of Fat Man's Agony. Not quite Broad Stand!

The Bullbeggars sign at Little Heath. You have to be careful how you say this! Perhaps there was an inn here once. What does the name mean? According to the dictionary a bullbeggar is "Something used or suggested to produce terror, as in children or persons of weak mind; a bugbear." So now you know!

The Way drops down to reach the Grand Union Canal. The canal was originally known as the Grand Junction Canal, and its construction commenced in 1793 and was completed in 1805.

At Winkwell the canal passes the ancient Three Horseshoes pub. Many years ago, when we lived at Hemel, we used to cycle and walk out here. The swing bridge is one of only three remaining on the Grand Union.
The hazel trees by the towpath are full of catkins. This is by the last lock before Boxmoor.

We just finished the walk before the worst of the rain fell from the dark clouds beyond the lock.
