The Hertfordshire Way

Stage 8: Kings Langley to Shenley - Part 2

Leaving the parkland, the Way crosses the River Colne.

A well-constructed footbridge....over a dry gulch!

This is Wall Hall. The house was built in 1802 when the Gothic revival style was in fashion. It was originally called Aldenham Abbey. It became a teacher training college, and is now owned by the University of Hertfordshire.

Everywhere on this walk today, the hawthorn is bedecked in may blossom.

These are horse chestnut flowers in Aldenham churchyard.

After passing through Letchmore Heath, the Way goes along this field path fringed with may blossom and cow parsley.

Nearing the end of the leg, the Way goes through Shenley Park. This was created as part of the redevelopment of Shenley Hospital, a mental hospital, closed in 1996, which occupied part of the Porters Park estate, home at various times to the architect Nicholas Hawksmoor and Admiral Lord Howe.
During this leg we passed the half way mark of the Way. We have now completed 94½ miles (57%) of the Way.
