Latterbarrow, 18 September 2004

At 10 in the morning torrential rain was falling in Coniston, but the skies cleared resulting in a beautiful sunny morning with crystal clear views for a walk on Latterbarrow, a 803 feet hill to the east of Hawkshead.

On the way to Hawkshead I stopped at Monk Coniston at the head of the lake. The water level was high, right up to the road.

The walk up the lane from Hawkshead passes through the hamlet of Colthouse, where there was some early autumn colour.

Another sign of autumn - an attractive mushroom in the woods.

After leaving the forestry plantations, the path breaks out into the open nearing the top of Latterbarrow. This is the splendid view across to the Coniston massif.

The 20 feet high obelisk on the summit.

The view across to Windermere, Ambleside, and the Fairfield massif.

An attractive sky, with the Howgill Fells on the horizon.

A panoramic view from the summit - click on the image for a larger version.

On the descent, the Kentmere fells form the backdrop to this old rowan.
