LORD'S SEAT CIRCUIT 7 December 2004

This walk started from the parking area near Spout Force to the west of the Whinlatter Pass. It formed a circuit over the tops surrounding the valley of Aiken Gill. Before commencing the steep initial climb to the Brown How top of Whinlatter there was this view across to Broom Fell which we would go over later in the day.

A dramatic sky over Grisedale Pike seen from Brown How

Wainwright regards the Brown How top, with its odd semi-circular wall, as the summit of Whinlatter, and Adrienne celebrates completing the North Western Fells with a swig of water.

As we walk over Whinlatter we continue to see interesting skies over Grisedale Pike and Hopegill Head

The eastern top of Whinlatter with its small cairn

After going over Tarbarrel Moss and Ullister Hill we ascended Lord's Seat. The sun is burning the mist away from the top of Skiddaw. Ullock Pike and Long Side are also in view.

From the summit of Lord's Seat, this is the view east over Barf to the Skiddaw massif.

The large cairn on Broom Fell - this wasn't there when Wainwright wrote his guide!

From Broom Fell the route goes over Widow Hause before ascending Graystones

The view eastwards from Graystones over Broom Fell and Lord's Seat to Skiddaw. The cairn marks the true summit, which is a little south of the other cairn treated by Wainwright as the top of the fell.

The sun is beginning to set, but lights up the hillside as we descend by Swarth Gill back towards our starting point. The view is across the Darling How plantation to Brown How, and beyond to Grisedale Pike.
