RAVEN CRAG 7 September 2005

We sat in the car at the Thirlmere dam and waited for the rain to stop. Eventually we decided that the trees would give us at least some shelter, and so started the 950 feet climb to the top of Raven Crag.

Looking through the leaves - it does seem to have stopped raining.

Raven Crag

The clean damp air around here seems to be good for lichens.

On top of the crag at 1520 feet, looking across High Rigg to Clough Head.

The trunks of dead trees make an intriguing foreground to the views of Thirlmere.

The summit cairn is overshadowed by trees.

Raven Crag is another one of the many places in the district with recently fallen trees.

To get the best views of Thirlmere you have to drop down a little from the summit cairn to a viewpoint which is right on the edge of the drop down the vertical face of the crag.

The dam is right below our feet.

A last look at Thirlmere before we retrace our steps.

Looking up at the sky through the pines on the descent.
