ULLOCK PIKE and LONG SIDE - 17 April 2005

Not a Spring day! Even down here, just above the Orthwaite lane lay-by looking to Bassenthwaite village and Binsey, it's dull, cold, and very very windy.

The view into Southerndale with Ullock Pike and Long Side ahead. Out of the wind just here!

The intriguing rock outcrops known as Watches.

Nearing the summit of Ullock Pike. The strong wind has become a gale and its very cold and we coming into snow patches. BLUETIGER did well to hold the camera still for these images.

Derwentwater beyond. It is now seriously breezy!

This is the top of Long Side. It is now almost impossible to stand up, as the gale is pushing us over the edge. This is the first time in 30 years of walking in the Lake District that the only way BLUETIGER can touch the summit cairn is by crawling on hands and knees through the snow.

The sky looks distinctly menacing.

Skiddaw. The path goes across the snow field, and we can see several people try to go up it, get stuck, and gingerly retrace their steps. People we pass tell us that is too icy to ascend, especially in the gale. So, the conditions dictate that we have to go back down.
